The Knowledge Trust: Shaping a critical role for 21st and 22nd Century Knowledge Professionals

The Knowledge Trust is a commitment by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science to shape a critical role for 21st century knowledge professionals. Access to the record of human activity and achievement enables and ignites innovation, service and citizenship. Every day, the quantity, diversity, and complexity of the world’s knowledge increase at a rate not previously confronted. Those who will lead and project pathways through this remarkable record must be fully conversant with the character and context of both the precise information need and the available information. Without complete confidence and a deep understanding of today’s information dynamics, the entire inquiry is at risk. Citizens around the world are increasingly aware that they often need a trusted guide to help sort and substantiate the information they require. The new knowledge professional will increasingly be called upon to provide, validate, organize, manage, disseminate and preserve information required for endeavors in every walk of life. Consequently, we believe that leading institutions are obligated to review and design anew the roles and models for the knowledge professionals who will assume a larger and more pivotal role in the 21st century.
