We are six librarians working in academic, public, and school libraries across the United States. In addition to essays by its founders, In the Library with the Lead Pipe features articles by guests representing special libraries and archives, as well as educators, administrators, library support staff, and community members. If you want to submit a guest post, see our submission guidelines.

In the Library with the Lead Pipe is intended to help improve our communities, our libraries, and our professional organizations. Our goal is to explore new ideas and start conversations; to document our concerns and argue for solutions. Each article is openaccess and is peer-reviewed by at least one external and one internal reviewer.

The Knowledge Trust is a commitment by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science to shape a critical role for 21st century knowledge professionals. Access to the record of human activity and achievement enables and ignites innovation, service and citizenship. Every day, the quantity, diversity, and complexity of the world’s knowledge increase at a rate not previously confronted. Those who will lead and project pathways through this remarkable record must be fully conversant with the character and context of both the precise information need and the available information. Without complete confidence and a deep understanding of today’s information dynamics, the entire inquiry is at risk. Citizens around the world are increasingly aware that they often need a trusted guide to help sort and substantiate the information they require. The new knowledge professional will increasingly be called upon to provide, validate, organize, manage, disseminate and preserve information required for endeavors in every walk of life. Consequently, we believe that leading institutions are obligated to review and design anew the roles and models for the knowledge professionals who will assume a larger and more pivotal role in the 21st century.

Toward this end, we maintain a listing of free software and systems designed for libraries (the physical, books-on-shelves kind), and we track news about project updates or related issues of interest. oss4lib started at the Yale Medical Library in early February 1999 thinking there were probably other folks like us out there who might be working on free library software or looking for same.
